Eureka by Emma Jean Jansen
Now I have returned from Quilt Market at Houston I thought I might share with you the inspiration behind each of the designs.
GOLD VEINS
Like the name suggests this fabric is a shows the gold running through the earth.
I also love that it looks a bit like a marble fabric with the fabulous touches of metalic.
QUARTZ
I was fascinated by the quartz crystal I found as a child in the land around where I grew up.
I used to head out with my pick and bucket and collect my treasure.
Unfortunately I never stuck gold but had a fabulous time looking for it!
MINE SHAFT MAP
When designing this range I spent lots of time looking through books about Ballarat's mining history.
In one of the books I found an amazing mind shaft map. It was much more complicated than the design
I created but I loved the idea so I designed my own version.
CORES
This design represents the changing colours in the earth when miners would core down into the earth.
I always like to have a stripe in my range but wanted it to be a bit special.
This print is great for binding and I love the movement it creates in a quilt.
WAGON WHEELS
As a child I was lucky enough to be involved in a group called FOSH, Friends of Sovereign Hill.
Sovereign Hill is an open air museum in Ballarat that depicts the first 10 years after the discovery of gold there in 1851.
Once a month on a Sunday my Mum, Sister and Brother would go to Sovereign Hill and dress up in costume as volunteers
and pretend that we lived on the goldfields. It was a fantastic experience and one of my favourite things to do was
to ride around in the stage coach, so I decided I had to have a wheel print in my range.
SOUTHERN CROSS STARS
The Eureka Flag was used as the war flag during the Eureka Rebellion in 1854 and featured the Crux Australis constellation (Southern Cross) I really wanted to incorporate the stars into my range because of the strong symbolism and relationship to my range name Eureka.
I hoped you liked finding out a little more behind the designs in my range Eureka.
In the next couple of weeks I will be sharing the quilts that I designed from the fabric.
I can't wait to show you!
Very perceptive, they are lovely Emma.
Loving these fabrics, Emma and thanks for the insight into the design story. Can’t wait to sew with them.
This is beautiful – love all the colours, and your inspiration for them.
Wish to purchase fabric featuring MAGPIES. Do you have anything with magpies on it?
Hi Anne, yes I have released a Magpie fabric, it was from my fabric range Melba. The range was released 12 months ago but the magpie has been added to the Ella Blue basics range. I know Patchwork with Gail B stocks the full range of colurs, thanks, emma
Oh Emma, now I have to use this range since my heritage is with the Eureka Stockade, and has strong connections with Scobies death, I now think I need to make a quilt for my great great grandfather. I can’t wait to see them in the flesh and touch them. Anything with gold in them is delicious But to have our heritage also…Wow!
