Lake Garden Quilt Sew Along

Lake Garden Quilt Sew Along

Welcome and thank you for joining the Lake Garden Sew Along.

Time to have some fun!
To give you more time to pick your fabrics this welcome email is arriving two weeks before the sew along starts. This should give you time to raid your stash or go shopping and hopefully all the quilt inspiration included will help make it easier for you.

GETTING STARTED:
  • Make sure you’ve purchased your Lake Garden Pattern

  • Make or purchase the acrylic template set.

  • The Lake Garden SAL will be taking place in my private facebook group but also on Instagram if Facebook isn't your thing. Make sure you have joined the group by clicking on the aqua link below.

  • If you do post your photos on Instagram, be sure your account is set to public so we can all see your posts using the #lakegardenssal and #lakegardenquilt hashtags.

  • Post a photo of your fabric selection -  Once you have chosen your fabric, post a photo and introduce yourself to all the other “Lakers”, this is a great way to meet others participating in the sew along.

PLANNING YOUR QUILT:

Your first step is to decide what size version you are making. The Lake Garden Quilt comes in 6 sizes, Baby, Small Throw, Large Throw, Twin, Queen and King Size.

CHOOSING YOUR FABRICS:

This quilt is fat quarter friendly, however I will also share a few different options that might work with your stash, fat eighths or yardage. I'm giving you all the choices!

My orginal quilt included a selection of Ruby Star Society prints teamed with my signature black and white ¼" stripe.

Each fat quarter will yield you a pair of the two different blocks in the quilt.

So the first option (which is mentioned in the pattern on Page 4) would be to double your fabrics by choosing Fat Eighths instead of Fat Quarters. This would be perfect if you wanted to use smaller pieces of fabric from your stash.
Each eighth would make one of the blocks below.

The 2nd version I made used two bundles of Art Gallery fabrics that I had in my stash. One bunsle was floral and one was solids.
I paired them with a Yuwa check and a Robert Kaufamn spot which were also from my stash.

Before I decided on the colour and fabric placement for this quilt I had a play and made 3 different digital mock-ups.
I went with the 1st version below, using the green check in C Rectangles, the florals and spot  in the Dunkard's Path blocks, and the solids as the diamonds.
The next images are the other options that I could have gone with, flipping the positions of the florals and plains with the check and spot. So many possibilities!

If you are unsure of what you would like to do, make sure you take advantage of the colouring sheet included in the pattern.

Next up I am going to give your the yardage requirements for both Template A and the C rectangles. This will help if your wanted to use just one fabric in either of these positions.

I have been on a bit of a mission of late to use up my stash. The weight of all the fabric I have (and to be honest it's not really that much for a designer) has been heavy. The first two versions I have made are from fabrics in my stash and so I want to continue that way. I am challenging myself to use what I have.

The inspiration behind this fabric pull is a beautiful spring garden with pink and red flowers.
I don't have exact amounts so I will make do with what I have. Cutting more from some of the fabrics and less from other.

I am making the Large Throw size using the reds and pinks in the Drunkard's Path blocks and the aquas and green stripe in the Half Flying Geese Units.

The colour combo is making super duper happy and I think it's one of the freshest and prettiest colour combos I've worked with.

COLOUR INSPIRATION

I had some fun playing around with a few colour combos to hopefully give you some direction if you are stuck.
This rainbow version totally changes the look of the quilt and gives it a more blocky look.

I had to have a play with Tula Pink's Untamed. This range definitely works with the black and white stripe and I think it showcases the range really nicely.

A new range has caught my attention from Ruby Star Society called Animal Animal. It's so super cute and would be a perfect match for Lake Garden.

To make designing your version of the Lake Garden quilt, I have some exciting news to share with you all.
The Lake Garden pattern has been added to the Quilt Mock up website.

This website is super easy to use and also heaps of fun. I found the Strawberry range by Ruby Star Society on the Moda website and added the swatches following the instructions detailed on the Quilt Mock Up site. It is then really easy to switch the positions, add more fabrics and have a play. I am predicting that many hours will be spent playing, how fun!

Finally I am sharing my fabric pull for the sew along.
I'm not 100% decided but pretty close. I'll have a play with them over the next couple of days and will probably add a few more and probably take some away a few more. It's a process that's for sure, but one I love.

The next newsletter will be arriving in your inboxes on the 23rd of January. This will be all about planning and cutting, and will signal the offical start of the sew along.

Thanks so much for joining me on this awesome patchwork adventure. I can't wait to share lots of tips and sewing hacks with you all. Let's have some fun!
