Week 2
Welcome to Week 2 of the Lake Garden Quilt Sew Along.
Now that we have finished all our cutting it's time to get our machines out and start sewing.
I am very much a person who likes to completely finish each stage before moving onto the next. What's your sewing style? One block at a time or chain piece each stage?
This week we are making all the Half Flying Geese Units.
The Lake Garden Sew Along will be taking place in both the Facebook Group and on Instagram. If you post in Instagram, be sure your account is set to public so we can all see your posts using the #lakegardenSAL and #lakegardenquilt hashtags.
If you have just joined the SAL, welcome! Make sure to grab the pattern, read up on all the details and choose your fabrics, so you can catch up and join in the fun.

HALF FLYING GEESE UNITS:
This week we are going to be making the Half Flying Geese Units.
These are super easy to make, just follow the steps below. I am a big fan of chain piecing these units. All that means is you don't cut the thread between blocks as you sew. It saves time and that's what I'm all about!

Mark the back of your D Square with a diagonal line. I like to use a sandpaper board, small ruler and chaco lead in my machanical pencil. If the fabric is light I use a dark lead and if the fabric is dark I use a light lead.
Chaco leads are water erasable and my favourite for marking fabric.
If you are using stripes, please remember to mark all your squares the same way.

Sew along the marked line. I haven't marked the 2nd line like I mentioned in the Week 1 newsletter because I'm not sure if I will piece anything from the extra triangles this time.
They might be heading off to my son's school for the art room.
If you have decided to sew as you, good for you. You will be able to make a matching cushion or add a strip of pieced blocks to the backing.

Next up, trim the triangle off using ¼" seam allowance.

Then press your triangle away from the rectangle.

If you don't like the idea of marking the back of the D Squares you can also use Diagonal Seam Tape from Cluck Cluck Sew.
This awesome product sticks to your sewing machine table and lets you line up the squares to get the correct position to sew. This tape is also perfect for Half Square Triangles.

When it comes to the triming of the triangles you can also stack them to speed up the process. Just line up all the sewn seams using one of the vertical lines on your cutting mat.

Then using your rotary cutter (with a sharp blade) cut through to create the ¼" seam allowance. If you are having problems cutting through all the layers, just space the blocks further apart so there is less overlapping.

That is Week 2, done and dusted.
Next week we will be tackling the curves and making the Drunkard's Path Rectangle Blocks.

I'll have lots of tips to give you the confidence to sew these easily .
I love seeing all your posts in the Facebook group and how supportive you all are of each other. What a fabulous community we have created!
